Occurrences and Narratives as Constraints in the Branching Structure of the Situation Calculus
نویسنده
چکیده
The Situation Calculus is a logic of time and change in which there is a distinguished initial situation S0 and all other situations arise from the different sequences of actions that might be performed starting in the initial one. Within this framework, it is difficult to incorporate the notion of an occurrence, since all situations after the initial one are hypothetical. These occurrences are important, for instance, when one wants to represent narratives. There have been proposals to incorporate the notion of an action occurrence in the language of the Situation Calculus, namely Miller and Shanahan’s work on narratives [22] and Pinto and Reiter’s work on actual lines of situations [27, 29]. Both approaches have in common the idea of incorporating a linear sequence of situations into the tree described by theories written in the Situation Calculus language. Unfortunately, several advantages of the Situation Calculus are lost when reasoning with a narrative line or with an actual line of occurrences. In this paper we propose a different approach to dealing with action occurrences and narratives, which can be seen as a generalization of narrative lines to narrative trees. In this approach we exploit the fact that, in the discrete Situation Calculus [13], each situation has a unique history. Then, occurrences are interpreted as constraints on valid histories. We argue that this new approach subsumes the linear approaches of Miller and Shanahan’s, and Pinto and Reiter’s. In this framework, we are able to represent various kinds of occurrences; namely, conditional, preventable and non-preventable occurrences. Other types of occurrences, not discussed in this article, can also be accommodated.

Constructing Stories in a Foreign Language: Analysis of Iranian EFL Learners’ Lived Narratives Structure
Most popular models of narratives and narrative analyses have been drawn on native stories, yet EFL learners’ narratives have not received due narrative analysis. The present study then aims at scrutinizing the structure of personal English stories as told by EFL learners. To this aim, three hundred narratives were collected through classroom discussions and interviews. Qualitative analysis met...
متن کاملExplaining the Level of Human Thought in the Parallel Civilizations Based on Formal Structure and Visual Imagination Formed in Mythical Narratives
Myth, like any other form of narrative, has an undeniable role in visual imagination based on the foundations of mythical thought. Ernst Cassirer, by recovering the fundamental principles of mythical thought, brings against them to the foundations of contemporary rational thought and defines the fundamental features of mythical thought as compared to modern rational thought. He also believes t...

The Language E is a simple declarative language for describing the e ects of action occurrences within a given narrative, using an ontology of actions, time points and uents (i.e. properties which can change their truth values over time). This paper shows how E may be extended to deal with rami cations. More precisely, we show how Language E domain descriptions can include statements describing...
متن کاملRhetorical Structure Analysis of EFLs’ Written Narratives of a Picture Story
This study was set to reveal how second language learners use rhetorical relations in their written narratives in terms of Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) primarily proposed by Mann & Thompson (1987) and developed by Mann, Matthiessen & Thompson (1992). To this end, sixty written narratives based on the picture story book ‘Frog, where are you?’ were collected from EFL learners and were put to...

Since branching region of an active nerve fiber is an abrupt widening of the structure, two concepts emerge: first, the stimulating current must be sufficient to raise the outgrowing fibers above the thresh¬old, and secondly, the stimulating current will be divided in proportion to the characteristic admittance of the branches. On the other hand, blocking of the nerve impulse in this region is ...
